How to use Meta's Muse Spark Open, the best American open model
By Ben Lane

On 15 October Meta released Muse Spark Open, and Artificial Analysis, a company that tests AI models independently, rates it the strongest open model from any American company. Open means Meta has published the model itself rather than keeping it on its own servers, so you decide where it runs and where your work goes. It doesn't beat ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini on the hardest tests, but it gives the most accurate knowledge of any open model, keeps its answers short and costs a fraction of the leaders to use. This guide shows you where it stands against the models you already know, how to test it on a made-up version of your own work in ten minutes, what open means for your data, and how to run it on machines you control for the work that can't leave the building.
